What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

Your MRI technologist prepares patients, completes safety screening, positions them, runs approved protocols, acquires images, documents the exam, and turns the room for the next appointment. Unlike a hospital post driven by urgent add-ons, this role commonly works from a booked list.

The hire must recover from late arrivals, motion, anxiety, and incomplete studies without treating safety questions as schedule problems.

Ask about decisions made during an ordinary day, not just scanner brands. A useful candidate can explain how they review an order, prepare a patient, select coils and positioning, check images during the exam, and raise a protocol question.

We screen for outpatient ownership. Hospital MRI experience can translate well, but some candidates had help with screening, scheduling, documentation, or patient preparation. We ask what happened when a patient arrived late, disclosed new implant information, could not finish a sequence, or needed an exam rescheduled.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

Confirm current ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT certification. We review the stated credential, active status, work history, and explanations for employment gaps or board matters. Your center completes its own credential verification and decides whether any additional credential applies. Walk through MRI safety screening from first conversation to scanner-room entry.

  • We ask how the candidate follows up on implants, prior procedures, foreign-body history, and information disclosed after the questionnaire was signed.
  • Match technical experience to your actual study mix. If you perform cardiac, breast, prostate, spine, or contrast studies, we ask what protocols the person ran recently and what part they owned.
  • Use a motion or intolerance scenario. If a patient cannot complete a planned sequence, we ask how the technologist explains the next step, obtains usable images within the approved approach, documents the issue, and seeks direction.
  • Test patient communication with concrete questions. We ask how they explain noise, positioning, contrast steps when applicable, and the need to remain still. We also ask how they respond when a patient asks for results.
  • Review room turnover and recordkeeping. Ask how the candidate confirms the order and identity under your process, prepares the room, records completed work, flags an incomplete exam, and communicates a concern to designated staff.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

We speak with MRI technologists from outpatient imaging centers, diagnostic clinics, hospital imaging departments, and multispecialty practices. People may consider a move for a more predictable appointment pattern, a different study mix, a shorter commute, or more consistent MRI work.

We ask why each person is open to discussion rather than assume.

We also contact technologists whose current jobs divide time among modalities or general clinic duties. A focused MRI post may appeal to someone who wants more time with screening, positioning, protocol execution, and image acquisition.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is hiring on years of MRI work alone. Ask which studies they performed recently and what they did when an exam changed mid-scan. Another is treating screening as paperwork. A technologist must follow up when an answer, history, or patient statement raises a question.

03

Describing only pay and hours. State your study mix, appointment pattern, staffing, contrast process, equipment, and escalation path before interviews.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us your scanner model, regular studies, appointment pattern, contrast process, staffing, and who answers protocol questions. We present certification, recent work, protocol exposure, work-history context, communication examples, and reasons for considering a move. Their answers should distinguish actions they personally performed from work handled by a radiologist, nurse, or lead technologist.

Questions

Can you assist with temporary MRI coverage?

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. Per diem placement adds someone to your own pool, not individual shift coverage. Your team completes credentialing and clinical assessment before hire.

How do you identify genuine outpatient MRI experience?

We ask candidates to describe a booked day from screening through documentation and room turnover. We also ask about late arrivals, interrupted exams, and communication with radiologists or designated staff.

Must a candidate know our scanner brand?

Brand experience can shorten orientation, but it does not replace screening habits or protocol judgment. We identify platforms used and ask how the candidate learned unfamiliar software, coils, and tools.

Can hospital MRI experience fit this post?

Yes, if the candidate can describe ownership of scheduled exams and patient communication. Your interview should clarify who handled screening, documentation, preparation, and schedule changes in the prior role.

How do you handle a candidate who may receive a counteroffer?

We ask why the person began looking and what would need to change for them to stay. A counteroffer may address pay, schedule, commute, study mix, or none of those concerns.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us what your scheduled MRI day demands and where coverage breaks down. We will screen for the work your technologist will actually do.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
