What does this hire really come down to?
A general OR background does not show whether a nurse can work your cardiac cases. We screen for open-heart, valve, and TAVR exposure, then ask what the nurse actually did in the room. You tell us the case mix, scrub and circulating expectations, call window, and RN license standards.
We bring candidates whose answers fit those facts, not broad operating-room labels.
A strong CVOR interview examines actions before incision, during bypass, and while closing. Ask how the nurse builds the room for a valve or open-heart case, confirms specialty equipment, handles late preference-card changes, and communicates a missing item without disrupting sterile work.
Long cardiac cases test attention in a different way than short turnover-driven rooms. Ask candidates how they track counts, document implants and specimens, protect sterility during equipment changes, and stay ready when an emergent case follows a scheduled procedure.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Active RN license: We confirm the candidate holds an active RN license relevant to your opening. Your organization completes its own credentialing, license verification, and clinical assessment before a start date. CNOR status: CNOR can be a useful signal of operating-room knowledge, but it is not a universal legal mandate.
- We ask whether certification is active, expired, in progress, or not part of the candidate’s background.
- Open-heart case work: We ask for specific duties in open-heart cases. Did the nurse scrub, circulate, set up, manage counts, document implants, or support turnover between cardiac cases?
- Valve and TAVR exposure: We ask which valve and TAVR procedures the nurse has supported and what equipment or supplies they handled. This separates direct case participation from occasional observation or relief coverage.
- Bypass and invasive equipment awareness: We discuss the nurse’s role while perfusion and anesthesia manage their respective equipment. Useful answers cover room coordination, sterile-field needs, line awareness, documentation, and escalation when something is unavailable.
- Emergent call: We confirm the call rotation, response window, housing distance, and competing commitments. A candidate may be clinically strong yet unable to meet your callback expectation on a sustainable basis.
These are recruiting discussions about experience and stated credentials, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Your organization completes formal credentialing, license and privilege checks, and the hiring decision.
Where do we find them, and why would they move?
We recruit from heart programs at tertiary hospitals and academic ORs. These nurses may consider a move for a different call pattern, a closer commute, a chance to focus on a preferred cardiac case mix, or a permanent team after frequent internal changes.
Travel CVOR nurses are another source pool. Some seek a permanent role after moving between hospitals, while others prefer to keep traveling. We ask why a permanent position appeals now and what would make the location workable beyond one offer.
Which mistakes stall the search?
A common mistake is treating a general OR résumé as proof of independent CVOR readiness. Ask for the candidate’s exact scrub, circulating, and relief responsibilities in cardiac cases. Another is assuming years at a well-known heart program reveal the nurse’s daily assignment. A nurse may have worked mainly in another service line or covered cardiac rooms only occasionally.
Leaving call details until the offer stage. Discuss callback timing, rotation structure, and practical travel distance in the first serious conversation.
How would we run the search for this opening?
Tell us which cases create the immediate gap, such as open-heart, valve, or TAVR work. We ask candidates to walk through room setup, specialty supplies, counts, documentation, and their role during bypass. Your surgical leaders can test case-specific knowledge and team fit.
Set the case profile
Identify whether you need scrub coverage, circulating coverage, or both, plus the RN license standard.
Screen direct experience
We also ask what they do when a preference-card item is missing or a case changes late.
Interview against your call plan
We schedule candidates who understand the stated call plan, while your team makes the final clinical and credentialing decision.
Tell us the role and setting. We will discuss the work and terms with you before a search begins. There is no fixed shortlist or placement promise.

Can you help with travel, contract, or per diem coverage?
For temporary or other needs, describe the arrangement so we can discuss whether we can help. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts; per diem placement adds a nurse to your own pool rather than covering individual shifts.
How long can a CVOR search take?
Timing varies with your location, case mix, compensation, and call plan. A narrow request for recent scrub experience in open-heart, valve, and TAVR cases produces a smaller pool than a broader cardiac OR opening.
What should we do if a candidate receives a counteroffer?
Ask why the nurse considered leaving before discussing money alone. If call burden, schedule control, team relationships, commute, or career direction drove the search, a counteroffer may not settle those concerns.
Should we consider a relocating CVOR nurse?
Yes, if the nurse can explain the move in practical terms. Ask about timing, housing, family factors, and whether the call response window remains realistic after relocation.
How do fees work for a permanent placement?
No upfront fee. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What should you send us about this role?
Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

What are the replacement terms?

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?
