What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

Healthcare Headhunters recruits medical social workers for hospitals, dialysis programs, home health agencies and hospice providers. We start with the work you need covered: discharge planning, ongoing psychosocial support, home visits or end-of-life family support. An MSW degree alone does not tell you whether someone has handled those duties or needs a license for your position.

The setting changes the hiring decision. Dialysis work often involves recurring contact around transportation, insurance and adjustment to treatment. Home health involves assessing support where patients live.

Define the boundary between resource coordination and clinical social work before interviewing. Ask which assessments, counseling duties and documentation your role includes. Identify the required state license and any supervision arrangements. We screen license status and work examples involving discharge barriers, caregiver support or family counseling, depending on the assignment. A strong resource navigator may still lack the clinical authorization your position needs.

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

Ask: “Walk us through a discharge delayed by housing, transportation or caregiver concerns.” A useful answer identifies the barrier, contacts made, patient preferences, team communication and documentation. Listen for what happened when the first option failed. Ask: “How would you respond if a dialysis patient repeatedly missed treatment because transportation fell through?”

  • Look for assessment of the actual obstacle, coordination with the care team and realistic resource options, rather than assumptions about motivation.
  • Ask: “During a home visit, how do you assess whether promised caregiver help is actually available?” Useful evidence includes direct questions about schedules, tasks and backup support, plus a clear account of how concerns reach the agency team.
  • Ask: “How have you handled disagreement among hospice family members about available support?” Listen for the patient’s wishes, respectful boundaries, communication with the interdisciplinary team and appropriate referrals. The answer should not promise to resolve every conflict.
  • Ask: “Which license do you hold, and which duties have you performed under it?” Check the relevant licensing board, status and applicable restrictions. Separate degree, license and optional certificates; none should be treated as interchangeable evidence.
  • Ask: “What goes into your note after a difficult psychosocial assessment?” Look for relevant findings, patient goals, actions, referrals and follow-up ownership. Ask how the candidate keeps documentation current when calls, visits and team discussions compete for time.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

We look at hospital social work departments, dialysis programs, home health agencies and hospice providers. Community health and behavioral health backgrounds may also be relevant when candidates can demonstrate medical-team coordination and resource work. We do not treat experience in one setting as automatic preparation for another.

A candidate might move to gain more continuity with patients, reduce travel or change weekend coverage. Others may want a different balance of counseling and resource coordination. We ask what they want to change, then compare that answer with your visit schedule, caseload mix and coverage expectations.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is advertising an MSW degree without naming the license needed for the assigned duties. This invites applicants whose education matches but whose legal scope does not. Another is combining discharge planning, home visits and bereavement support without stating which work dominates. Candidates need to know where they will spend their time and who handles referrals.

03

Describing coverage as flexible without explaining weekends, travel and urgent referrals. Ask about those obligations directly rather than discovering a mismatch after an offer.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us the setting, patient population, reporting relationship and daily duties. We screen candidates against the assignment and discuss concrete examples from their work. Compare shortlisted candidates’ examples of psychosocial assessment, referral follow-through and documentation with your assigned duties. Include required licensure, visit territory, documentation system and coverage schedule.

01

Define the assignment

We clarify whether your opening centers on discharge barriers, longitudinal support or family and bereavement work.

02

Review relevant evidence

You receive the context needed to choose interviews. Use those interviews to test judgment, local resource knowledge and boundaries with clinical colleagues.

03

Complete the hiring decision

Ask how each candidate would handle an unavailable community service or a caregiver unable to provide promised help. You assess clinical practice, complete credentialing and decide whom to hire. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Questions

Can hospital experience transfer to dialysis?

It can, but ask about repeated patient contact and ongoing practical barriers. Discharge planning experience does not by itself demonstrate comfort with longitudinal support. Hospital social workers may address discharge barriers while several teams seek answers. Hospice work includes family communication, grief support and practical planning around end-of-life care.

Does every medical social worker opening need the same license?

No: the state and assigned duties determine which license is needed. Specify clinical counseling, assessment and supervision duties before choosing the license language.

What should we clarify about home visits?

State the territory, travel expectations and visit schedule. Ask how candidates communicate concerns discovered at home and follow through on referrals.

How should we assess hospice family support experience?

Ask for an example involving conflicting family expectations. Look for attention to patient wishes, team communication and boundaries around counseling and referrals.

Should we test knowledge of local resources?

Yes, but also ask how candidates verify eligibility and availability. A memorized directory is less useful than a dependable referral process.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us which setting and duties you need covered. We will help you define the search and examine candidates’ relevant work.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
