The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A transfusion service technologist may review type and screen results, investigate discrepancies, select products, monitor dating, and respond to urgent requests. Your opening needs direct blood bank bench experience, not a general laboratory rotation alone. We recruit permanent hires on contingency.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Ask candidates to walk through work they performed themselves. For a positive screen, ask what panel reactions they reviewed, how they documented exclusions, what added testing they selected, and when they escalated the case. A broad statement about “working up antibodies” does not show their decision-making.

Also test handoffs and urgency. If surgery requests blood and a historical antibody appears, the technologist must review records, communicate limits, document the release path, and involve the right internal reviewer. We ask which release decisions candidates handled themselves and which needed supervisory review.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

ASCP BB or SBB credentials. When your position calls for ASCP BB or SBB, we confirm the candidate holds that credential and ask how recently they used blood bank training at the bench. If your state requires a laboratory license, your team identifies and verifies the applicable license.

  • Antibody identification. We ask for a recent example of a positive screen. Candidates should explain panel interpretation, selected cells, exclusions, unresolved reactions, and when peer review or referral was needed.
  • AABB standards. We ask how AABB standards affect records, product handling, investigations, and final review. A useful answer explains what the person does when the documentation trail conflicts with testing.
  • Methods and analyzer work. We separate manual serology, gel testing, automated testing, and result review experience. We ask what the candidate checked during an instrument flag, reagent concern, or unexpected result.
  • Quality records. We ask who reviewed quality control, recorded corrective work, maintained logs, and took part in proficiency testing. This distinguishes direct follow-up from work completed after another technologist’s review.
  • Inventory and urgent release. We ask how the candidate monitored product dating, special product availability, and low-stock notices. For an urgent release, we ask what was verified, who was contacted, and how the event was recorded.

These are recruiting discussions about experience and stated credentials, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Your organization completes formal credentialing, license and privilege checks, and the hiring decision.

Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

Our source pools include hospital transfusion services, blood centers, and reference immunohematology labs. Hospital candidates may bring pretransfusion testing, inpatient requests, scheduled procedures, emergency calls, and communication with operating room or nursing staff. Blood center professionals may have product, donor, distribution, or testing experience, so we examine their hospital bench exposure closely.

Reference laboratory candidates may bring frequent complex serology work. We ask why they are open to a change.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is hiring a general laboratory candidate without asking who performed antibody identification, discrepancy resolution, and product release. Lead staff may otherwise inherit work the new hire has not handled. Another is treating ASCP BB or SBB as the entire technical interview. The credential does not show recent documentation habits, manual methods, analyzer troubleshooting, or urgent-release judgment.

03

Waiting until an offer is near to discuss call, weekends, holidays, and emergency response. State the rotation and reporting expectations before final interviews.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us which shifts need coverage, whether call is included, and which duties occur most often. We ask role-specific questions before presentation and share relevant work history. Have your transfusion service leader compare shortlisted candidates’ antibody workups, discrepancy investigations, and product-release responsibilities with your bench duties.

01

Map the daily bench work

Include testing methods, product mix, antibody workload, inventory tasks, and escalation routes for difficult cases.

02

Screen for direct evidence

Your transfusion service leader can then assess local procedures, documentation practices, technical judgment, and communication during interviews.

03

Assess the bench shortlist

Ask each candidate to explain a testing record and a shift handoff from their own experience. Identify any training needs before selecting a hire. For standard permanent searches, the written agreement states the fee and replacement terms. For temporary or other needs, describe the arrangement so we can discuss whether we can help.

Questions

Should we search beyond our local area?

That depends on local supply, schedule, the ASCP BB or SBB target, and the complexity of your antibody work. If relocation is possible, discuss timing and support early so both sides can decide whether a move is practical. People may consider a move for schedule changes, broader duties, specialized testing, compensation, or relocation.

How is a Blood Bank Technologist different from a general MLS candidate?

We look for direct transfusion service duties rather than a broad laboratory rotation. Interviews should cover compatibility testing, antibody identification, product handling, records, discrepancy work, and urgent-release participation.

Does every candidate need ASCP BB or SBB certification?

ASCP BB or SBB is the credential target for this search, so we screen for it. Your laboratory decides whether another credential, prior experience, or a state laboratory license meets the position’s stated criteria.

What should our team ask about AABB standards?

Ask how AABB standards affect a record the candidate completes or reviews during a normal shift. A strong answer may cover a documentation discrepancy, product issue, investigation record, or follow-up after a quality finding.

Can Healthcare Headhunters help before a permanent hire is made?

Permanent/direct-hire recruitment is our core service across clinical, operational and leadership roles. If you need a temporary or other arrangement, describe the need so we can discuss whether we can help. Responsibilities and terms must be confirmed separately for that engagement. Your organization retains clinical assessment and credentialing responsibility. Per diem placement adds a professional to your own pool rather than filling individual shifts.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

What are the fee and payment terms?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed agreement sets the fee and when it is due, along with the placement terms. We agree those terms before the search starts and before any candidate introductions. Temporary or contract coverage is a separate arrangement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
