What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

An LCSW may open the day with an intake, move through scheduled therapy, respond to a care-coordination question, update treatment goals, and finish the related chart work. We recruit permanent Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers, and Therapists after you define that daily mix.

A current state LCSW license does not show how a clinician handles competing work. Ask what they do when an intake runs over, a patient cancellation creates an opening, and several notes remain unfinished. A useful answer explains the order of decisions, who receives an update, and what work moves to another time.

Modality labels also need context. Someone may list CBT, DBT, or EMDR but have used it with a different population, session length, or supervision model. We ask what the clinician personally did in a recent course of treatment, why that approach was selected, and what they documented after the session.

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

State LCSW license and telehealth states. We screen the license a candidate reports, current board standing, and the states where they say they can provide telehealth. You complete credentialing and determine whether that coverage matches your service area. CBT, DBT, and EMDR experience.

  • When a modality matters, we ask about training, supervision, patient population, and recent use. We also ask when the clinician sought consultation or referred a case rather than working outside their experience.
  • Caseload and productivity. We ask about active cases, visit volume, intake schedules, groups, cancellations, and work counted as productive. This shows whether their prior role treated care coordination and chart review the same way yours does.
  • Documentation work. We ask when notes were completed, how the candidate captured intake findings and treatment goals, and how they corrected an incomplete chart. Familiarity with your EHR helps, but a clear note-completion routine matters more than experience with one platform.
  • Team communication. We ask how they shared relevant facts with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, primary care providers, case managers, or supervisors. Candidates should distinguish an urgent concern from a routine update and identify who needed the information.
  • Telehealth practice. For remote roles, we discuss video sessions, private communication, connection failures, missed visits, and remote documentation. Office-based therapy experience does not automatically show comfort with remote session decisions.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

Community mental health centers can produce LCSWs accustomed to varied referrals, public-funding documentation, and outside-service coordination. A clinician may consider a move for a different case mix, more predictable scheduling, or closer access to consultation. We also reach clinicians from outpatient practices, FQHCs, hospitals, and telehealth groups.

Some are looking for a narrower specialty, in-person work, remote work across licensed states, or a clearer supervision structure.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

Avoid choosing the longest certification list without asking what the clinician did during a normal therapy day. Training alone does not show fit with your visit length or note deadline. Do not leave productivity definitions until the offer stage. Groups, intakes, care coordination, and late cancellations may be counted differently by the candidate and your team.

03

Avoid treating EHR training as the only onboarding question. Ask whether the clinician can turn a session into a timely note that supports follow-up and billing review.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us the visit mix, active caseload, session duration, note deadline, schedule pattern, and telehealth duties. We screen reported LCSW credentials and ask how prior therapy schedules combined intakes, ongoing visits, care coordination, and chart work. Compare shortlisted clinicians' examples of intake documentation, treatment-goal updates, and consultation decisions against your patient mix and appointment model.

01

Describe the actual week

Include clinical populations, referral sources, and the colleagues involved in routine consultation.

02

Review work examples

You interview shortlisted clinicians and complete your own clinical assessment, references, and credentialing before selecting a hire.

03

Compare the shortlist

Discuss compensation, supervision, scheduling, productivity measures, remote-work expectations, and start timing with the finalist. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Questions

Should we expect counteroffers?

A counteroffer may arise when an LCSW has an established caseload or scarce specialty background. We ask why they are considering a move, such as schedule, leadership, case mix, compensation, or growth. That discussion helps you judge whether your opening addresses the real reason.

Do you recruit LCSWs for therapy and care coordination roles?

Yes, when the scope is specific. Tell us how much of the week includes therapy, intakes, coordination, chart review, family contact, and team meetings. We ask candidates about that same work mix.

How do you assess CBT, DBT, or EMDR experience?

We ask for examples of training and recent work with the modality. We also cover supervision, patient population, session format, and documentation. You decide whether that background meets your clinical standards.

What if we need telehealth coverage in several states?

List the states before the search begins. We screen for the state LCSW licenses candidates report for telehealth and flag coverage questions early. Your organization verifies licensure and credentialing before a start date.

Can you help with temporary coverage instead?

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. Per diem placement means adding a clinician to your own pool, not filling individual shifts.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Share the workday, license coverage, and clinical scope you need. We will screen for the decisions your next LCSW will make.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
