What does this advanced practice provider salary guide cover?
This guide compares pay for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, CRNAs, CNMs, CNSs, and lead APP roles. It helps you judge the work itself, not just the title. We look at patient type, shift pattern, and who makes each decision on the job.
Titles overlap across sites. An FNP may do primary care. A PA may cover medicine or surgery. A CRNA may work in anesthesia. The title alone does not tell you what the person does each day.
What does an APP workday usually include?
Most APP workdays start with chart review, patient visits, and follow-up messages. Some roles add admissions, discharges, procedures, refill work, or pre-op support. Others spend more time on education, care plans, and medication changes. The exact mix depends on the site and the patient flow.
When you write a job, ask about new consults, same-day visits, note signing, and after-hours calls. If the role includes first assist, home visits, or anesthesia coverage, say so in the posting. Those details change the job more than the title does.
How do different settings change the role?
Primary care, hospital medicine, emergency care, surgery, behavioral health, and anesthesia use APPs in different ways. One role may focus on panel follow-up and routine visits. Another may cover admissions, rounding, procedures, or urgent same-day care under a tighter review path.
Mixed settings matter too. A person may split time between clinic, facility work, and a surgical suite. That changes handoffs, scheduling, and which decisions stay with the physician-owner. Ask about the real weekly pattern before you compare offers.
Which credentials fit which kinds of work?
FNPs, AGPCNPs, AGACNPs, PNPs, NNPs, and PMHNPs often fit patient-group-specific work. PAs often fit broader medical and surgical coverage. CRNAs fit anesthesia work. CNMs and CNSs fit narrower settings where the daily work follows the site’s own workflow.
Do not hire by initials alone. Two people with the same credential may handle very different duties. Ask about procedures, call, rounding, admits, discharges, and whether the clinician works with direct physician review or more independent day-to-day coverage.
What changes pay for APP, PA, and CRNA roles?
Pay usually changes with schedule, call burden, procedure mix, and the amount of judgment the role carries. Lead and chief roles add coordination work. Nights, weekends, and split coverage also affect the offer. So do surgery, anesthesia, and after-hours responsibilities.
Scope rules, site volume, and replacement versus growth all matter. A job covering one clinic room is not the same as a role covering multiple sites or service lines. A salary guide should reflect the actual work, not only the credential name.
How do we help owners and managers define the search?
When you open a search, we ask about the patient group, the shift, and the team around the role. We ask which decisions belong to the APP, which belong to the physician, and which are shared. That gives you a cleaner job description and a more accurate search.
It also helps compare candidates fairly. One person may fit follow-up visits and medication work. Another may fit procedures, rounding, or anesthesia coverage. Lead APP roles need the added duties named clearly, so the offer matches the work.
What else should you ask about this edition?
How should we write a broad APP job title?
Start with the work, not the umbrella title. List the patient group, site, schedule, and who signs off on notes or orders. That makes an FNP, PA, or CRNA posting easier to read and compare.
What should we ask about supervision or review?
Ask who reviews complex cases, who signs notes, and who covers after hours. Also ask whether the APP works alone, with one physician, or with a larger team. Those details shape the daily workflow.
How do lead APP roles differ from standard roles?
Lead roles usually add scheduling, workflow review, onboarding, or staff support. The clinical work may stay similar, but the person also carries coordination duties. Name those duties before you make an offer.
Can one guide cover clinic, hospital, surgery, and anesthesia roles?
Yes, if you compare the work rather than the title alone. A clinic NP, hospital PA, and CRNA each has a different day and a different decision path. We treat that as part of the role description.
