What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A regional nurse consultant must do more than read reports. During a building visit, they may trace a missed assessment, compare records with policy, review follow-up audits, and ask the DON who owns the next correction. We recruit leaders who have led a building and can coach that work across several locations.

Strong candidates distinguish isolated charting lapses from repeated practice problems. We ask how they chose to review records, request a building action plan, or escalate when education did not change the next audit.

This role does not act as DON or send generic spreadsheet instructions. We ask how candidates leave visits with named owners, review dates, and evidence while challenging the DON and keeping accountability at the building.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

Multi-building oversight. We ask which buildings the candidate supported, how they planned travel, and how they chose between an on-site visit and a remote review. We also ask how they tracked open actions across separate locations when several buildings needed attention.

  • Survey recovery and QAPI. We ask about a survey finding, the immediate response, the corrective plan, and the audit used to test whether practice changed. Candidates should explain how a finding became active QAPI work rather than a completed binder.
  • DON track record. Former Directors of Nursing have handled staffing calls, record review, family concerns, and survey preparation at one building. We verify that history and ask what they reviewed themselves, delegated, and brought to executive leadership.
  • License and credential review. Where the role or state calls for it, we verify an active RN license and review stated credentials before presentation. Your team completes its own credentialing and clinical assessment, including scope and state-specific questions.
  • Audit judgment. We ask which reports they reviewed, what trend changed their view of a building, and what they checked before faulting a team. A credible answer separates incomplete data from repeated practice failures and identifies who must validate the correction.
  • Coaching local leaders. We ask about a DON who disagreed with the consultant’s finding. The candidate should describe the facts discussed, the agreed action, and the later follow-up without taking over daily nursing work or leaving the director unclear about next steps.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

We source former DONs seeking broader oversight after leading one facility and regional consultants from post-acute or senior living operators. We ask about territory, travel, reporting, ownership, or authority on recurring findings, rather than presume motives. We also speak with leaders who have handled survey recovery, QAPI, audits, and director coaching.

Title alone is not enough. We look for evidence that they visited buildings, tested reported fixes, and left local leaders with work they could maintain between visits.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is hiring a corporate clinical leader who cannot describe what they review during a building visit, who owns each correction, or how they test whether a change held. Another is treating survey experience as enough without asking whether the candidate wrote corrective plans, reviewed follow-up audits, and coached the DON after surveyors left.

03

Leaving territory, overnight travel, reporting lines, authority with local DONs, and visit rhythm unclear until late interviews.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

We discuss your buildings, states, travel pattern, current survey concerns, QAPI duties, reporting line, and authority with local DONs. We review licensure where applicable, DON experience, multi-building assignments, survey recovery work, audit habits, and reasons for a move. We introduce candidates whose background fits the role you described and help frame interviews around live portfolio issues.

01

Define the portfolio

This distinguishes a regional leadership search from a corporate advisory position and gives candidates a clear picture of the work.

02

Screen the work history

We ask concrete questions about visits, follow-up, data review, and difficult conversations with local leaders.

03

Present and support interviews

You make final clinical and credentialing decisions. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Questions

Do we pay before making a permanent hire?

No upfront fee applies to permanent contingency placement. You pay only if you hire under the written agreement, which also sets fee and replacement terms for standard searches. We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts.

Should a Regional Nurse Consultant be a former DON?

A former DON track record is valuable because the consultant must judge whether a local plan can work during an ordinary week. We ask how building leadership experience shaped the candidate’s director coaching, audit review, and follow-up.

How do you assess work with several local DONs?

We ask about a disagreement with a DON, the facts reviewed, the action agreed, and the later follow-up. We also ask how the candidate addressed missed deadlines without absorbing the building’s daily work.

What should we clarify about travel before interviews?

State the territory, expected overnight travel, visit frequency, home base, and whether the consultant responds to survey activity on short notice. Someone may want regional work but not a particular geographic pattern or travel schedule.

Can you recruit for a role spanning several states?

Yes: we screen for multi-state experience when it matters and verify active RN licensure where the role or state calls for it. Your organization should confirm its own state-specific credentialing, policy, and clinical expectations before hire.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

If you need a regional clinical leader who can turn building findings into owned follow-up, tell us about your portfolio and current gaps. We will start with the work this consultant must do on site and between visits.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
