What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A non-invasive cardiologist may read echocardiograms and nuclear studies, see clinic patients, round in the hospital, and answer consult questions on call. We define that work mix before we approach physicians. You compare people against the open job, not a broad specialty label.

First, identify what is breaking down. Studies may wait for interpretation, physicians may carry too much weekend call, or hospital consults may interrupt clinic days. Decide whether the opening needs scheduled reading sessions, another physician in the weekend rotation, or inpatient consult coverage that protects clinic appointments. A reading-focused physician may not want frequent inpatient coverage, even with strong imaging credentials.

Review the work around the physician as well. Ask who staffs the echo lab, how late studies arrive, who covers transfers, and how results reach referring clinicians. If the hire will divide time across sites, state that early. A strong interview tests recent work, not fellowship reputation alone.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

State physician license: Where your role requires it, we verify active physician licensure for the intended state and discuss timing concerns. You complete your own credentialing, privileging review, and clinical assessment before employment. ABIM Cardiovascular Disease: We verify ABIM Cardiovascular Disease certification or current status.

  • We ask how recent practice relates to your opening, including general cardiology consultation, outpatient visits, and hospital rounds.
  • Echocardiography work: We ask which echo studies the physician reads, whether they perform transesophageal echocardiography, and how often urgent studies interrupt clinic. NBE credentials may matter to your model or medical staff process, but you set that standard.
  • Nuclear cardiology work: We review recent nuclear interpretation duties and CBNC credentials when nuclear work is part of the role. General cardiology experience does not automatically show current independent nuclear reading experience.
  • Call and hospital coverage: We ask about recent rotation frequency, rounding, consult volume, weekend duties, transfer calls, and after-hours imaging questions. We compare those answers with your written schedule and each hospital location.
  • Work history and fit: We discuss each move and the work the physician wants next. A changing ownership model, uneven call, a spouse’s move, or a wish for more imaging time can prompt a move. We also ask how they communicate results with referring physicians and colleagues.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

We search cardiology groups, hospital-employed cardiology practices, and fellows preparing for their first attending role. Physicians in established practices may listen when leadership changes, call grows, or their current mix of clinic, imaging, and inpatient work no longer suits them.

Experienced physicians often compare reading responsibilities, staffing, referral patterns, compensation design, and control over their schedule. We present the facts of your opening rather than assume one motivation fits everyone.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is posting a general cardiology role without stating whether the physician will read echo, nuclear studies, or both. That draws applicants whose recent work does not match the opening. Another is describing call in one offer line. Share the rotation, sites, weekend rounds, backup, consult expectations, and after-hours imaging duties before final interviews.

03

Assuming a respected fellowship answers operational questions. Ask who reads studies when the lab runs late and how clinic obligations change during hospital coverage.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us the clinic days, imaging duties, hospital sites, call rotation, and reason for the search. We screen credentials, work history, license status, imaging background, and interest in your schedule. Compare shortlisted physicians’ recent echo and nuclear reading duties with the privileges your hospitals will grant.

01

Describe the open work

We turn those details into a clear physician profile and outreach message.

02

Review qualified physicians

You meet physicians whose answers fit the work described, then complete your own interviews and clinical review.

03

Select and document terms

In interviews, test how each candidate balances urgent interpretations, inpatient consults, and scheduled clinic visits. Review references and resolve any gaps in call experience before choosing a physician and confirming the offer. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Questions

What if we need coverage before a permanent physician starts?

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. Per diem placement adds a physician to your own pool rather than filling individual shifts. Fellows need a clear account of supervision, imaging scope, licensing plans, and call.

Should we hire a general cardiologist or an imaging-focused cardiologist?

Start with the uncovered work. If consults, rounds, and general call drive the search, recent inpatient cardiology work may matter most. If studies are waiting, ask detailed questions about current echo and nuclear interpretation duties.

Do all non-invasive cardiologists need NBE and CBNC credentials?

No: their relevance depends on the imaging work, your medical staff process, and the privileges you intend to request. We identify credentials and recent experience. You decide what your role calls for.

How should we present the call schedule?

Give candidates the actual rotation, hospital locations, weekend duties, rounding expectations, transfer coverage, and backup plan. If a departure or service expansion could change the schedule, say so. Clear detail helps both sides assess the arrangement.

Can we consider a fellow for this opening?

Yes, if you can explain the first-year scope, available mentorship, imaging duties, and call plan. We confirm training completion, planned licensing, board status, and the work the fellow expects to perform.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us what the next cardiologist must read, cover, and handle. We will begin a permanent contingency search based on those facts.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Which other positions in this family should you consider?

Cardiology Medical Director · Interventional Cardiologist

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
