What do we recruit for rural and critical access hospitals?

We recruit executives, physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and department leaders who can work across a broad day. A leader may round with staff, speak with the board, review staffing gaps, and answer issues from several departments. A physician may split time between clinic, inpatient care, and call.

We talk through the real work before we present anyone. That includes who they report to, which departments they touch, and what choices stay with the board or physician-owner. We also ask what support exists after hours, because that affects who will stay engaged.

Why is this setting harder to staff?

Small teams mean one hire can affect several people at once. If a nursing leader leaves, shifts, quality work, and daily problem solving may all move. If a physician seat stays open, call schedules and patient access can tighten. Buyers need people who are comfortable with broad scope and visible accountability.

Relocation is often the other barrier. Candidates ask about schools, housing, commute, and a spouse or partner’s work. We bring those questions into the first conversations so you are not spending time on people who will not move or who want a different pace.

How do we screen leaders for this work?

We ask how a normal week actually worked. Who did they meet first? What came to them on the spot? Which choices did they make themselves, and which belonged to the board, medical staff, or system leader? That gives us a practical picture of how they run the day.

We also look for examples of broad oversight. A chief nursing officer may manage staffing, quality, and service-line issues in one stretch. A chief financial officer may handle reimbursement questions, budget review, and local reporting. We want proof they have handled several lanes at once.

How do we screen physicians and advanced practice clinicians?

We ask about clinic days, inpatient work, call, and any cross-coverage. The title matters less than the actual schedule. If a physician was the only specialist on site, we ask how transfers worked, who took the first call, and what support was available after hours.

Fit with the community matters too. Some candidates want broad clinical work and close relationships with patients. Others want narrower practice or a larger system. We ask directly about relocation, family needs, and comfort with a smaller market, because those factors often decide the hire.

What happens during the search?

You send us the role, the site, and what needs to change with this hire. We ask about reporting lines, credentials, schedule limits, call, and any local issues that could rule out the wrong person. Then we shape outreach around the real job instead of the title alone.

We contact people directly and speak with them in live conversation. After that, we send a short list with a written brief on each person. We stay with the process through interviews, offer discussion, and the signed agreement so you are not left to guess at next steps.

How do our search terms work?

Our core work is permanent direct hire on contingency. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The signed agreement sets the exact terms, so both sides know what is covered before the search moves ahead.

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. If you need short-term help while the permanent search moves, we can discuss that path with you.

What else should you ask about this search?

What should we send before you start a rural hospital search?

Send the title, reporting line, schedule, and call pattern. Tell us which departments the person will touch and which decisions stay with the owner or board. That gives us a better target and helps us avoid people who look close on paper but will not fit the day.

How do you handle candidates who may not want to relocate?

We ask about relocation early. Housing, schools, commute distance, and partner work often matter more than the résumé. That lets us sort interested people from casual inquiries before interviews take up your time.

Can you help when one leader covers several departments?

Yes, we look for people who have already handled broad oversight. We ask about staffing, quality, daily problem solving, and which issues they handled themselves. That matters in smaller facilities where one person may be pulled in several directions.

Do you also support interim coverage?

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. That gives you a way to keep services moving while you work on the permanent hire.

What are the fee and payment terms?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed agreement sets the fee and when it is due, along with the placement terms. We agree those terms before the search starts and before any candidate introductions. Temporary or contract coverage is a separate arrangement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
