What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

Your referring dentists judge more than treatment results. They notice turnaround, communication, and whether difficult cases return with a clear record. We recruit endodontists for the work you actually assign: primary root canal treatment, retreatment assessment, microscope-based procedures, and referral communication.

A strong interview goes beyond asking whether the clinician uses a microscope. Ask when magnification changes their access plan, how they approach calcified canals, and what information they need before accepting a traumatic injury referral. Their answers should match the equipment, imaging access, assistant support, and case mix at your practice.

Retreatment work reveals judgment under pressure. You also need to know when they would discuss prognosis, seek more information, or refer a case onward rather than force it into a standard appointment slot.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

Confirm whether the endodontist is an American Board of Endodontics diplomate or eligible. We ask what stage of the process applies and document the answer for your review. Your practice decides whether that status meets its clinical standard. Verify the active dental license needed for practice in your state.

  • We screen license status and any disclosed timing issue, while your organization completes its own credentialing and clinical review before a start date.
  • Ask for concrete microscope experience. We discuss the candidate’s routine setup, assistant coordination, canal location work, and how often magnification is used in primary treatment and retreatment cases.
  • Review retreatment volume rather than accepting a general claim of experience. We ask about removing prior filling material, working around posts or restorations, and the candidate’s role in deciding whether a case belongs in the office.
  • Test diagnostic thinking with a realistic referral scenario. For example, if a referring dentist sends a tooth with suspected calcification, ask what records, images, symptoms, and restorative details the endodontist would review before booking care.
  • Check documentation and referring-office communication habits. Ask what the specialist sends after consultation or treatment, who receives it, and how they record findings when the restorative dentist needs a prompt next-step decision.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

Our search may include endodontic residents and clinicians from specialty practices. Residents can bring recent supervised training and may seek a first long-term setting with the right mentorship, equipment, and referral flow. We clarify what support they expect after residency.

Experienced specialists may consider a group practice after solo ownership, a limited case mix, or reduced access to microscopes and advanced imaging. Others may want less administrative responsibility. We test the reason for a move against the actual role, rather than treating any stated interest as commitment.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

Do not treat general dentistry experience as proof of microscope fluency. Ask what the clinician does under magnification during access, canal location, and retreatment work. Do not interview only around compensation. A specialist who expects a different case mix, referral process, or assistant model may decline late or leave quickly.

03

Do not skip the referral communication question. A technically capable endodontist can still create friction if restorative dentists receive unclear findings or delayed treatment notes.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us the expected mix of primary treatment, retreatment, traumatic injury assessment, and surgical referrals. We ask candidates how they evaluate a referral, organize microscope-assisted treatment, communicate with referring dentists, and document findings. You interview selected clinicians and complete your credentialing and clinical assessment.

01

Set the case profile

Identify the imaging, microscope, assistants, and scheduling pattern available in the operatory.

02

Screen the working method

We also screen credentials, work history, move timing, and reasons for considering the role.

03

Review the finalist carefully

Before an offer, confirm license timing, equipment expectations, compensation structure, referral relationships, and the first weeks of scheduling. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Questions

How do you assess whether an endodontist can handle our retreatment referrals?

We ask for specific examples of retreatment work, including how the clinician evaluates previous treatment and restorative obstacles. We also discuss the volume and type of retreatment cases they have handled, not just total years in practice. Ask candidates to describe how they assess prior treatment, restorations, posts, canal anatomy, and the referral question before scheduling treatment.

Is American Board of Endodontics status mandatory?

That is your practice’s decision. We confirm whether a candidate is an ABE diplomate or eligible, then present the status clearly so you can apply your own clinical standard.

Can you recruit for a practice that relies heavily on a dental operating microscope?

Yes: we ask about routine microscope use, case types, setup habits, and the candidate’s experience working with assistants under magnification. This helps separate occasional exposure from regular clinical use.

What can delay an endodontist’s start date?

State dental licensing, notice obligations, relocation planning, and your credentialing process can affect timing. We ask about each factor early and update you when a candidate’s stated timing changes.

How do you reduce the chance of a late withdrawal or counteroffer?

We ask why the specialist is considering a move and what would make the new role workable over time. If compensation, ownership expectations, case mix, or location remains unresolved, you should know before investing in final interviews.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
