What an open seat really costs

What does an open seat cost you every week?

An open role costs you more than the recruiting fee. Someone covers the work, waits for care, or stops a service. We ask what is falling behind and who is carrying it. Use your own figures to compare the cost of waiting with the cost of hiring.

01

The seat is costing you every week.

Overtime, diverted patients, a stretched team and a schedule held together by favors.

02

The posting brought the wrong people.

Applicants arrive, but the person who has done this exact work is employed and not looking.

03

You are the one chasing.

Screening calls, no-shows and follow-ups land on the desk of someone with a facility to run.

The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A psychiatrist may round on hospitalized patients, manage scheduled clinic visits, or conduct remote evaluations across state lines. Those jobs involve different decisions, documentation, and after-hours duties. We define your actual working week before we introduce physicians. ABPN certification matters, but it does not show how a physician works through a full day.

An inpatient psychiatrist may review nursing notes, assess patients, write orders, speak with families, and plan discharge. An outpatient psychiatrist may complete evaluations, adjust medications, handle refill questions, and decide when a patient needs earlier review. A telepsychiatrist must perform appropriate remote care while following the rules that apply where the patient is located.

If your role includes admission evaluations, consults, court-related documentation, or call, state that early. If your clinic has medication-management visits, ask how the physician handles late arrivals, missed appointments, incomplete outside records, and message queues. We screen work history and fit with those facts.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

Confirm active physician licenses for every state where the psychiatrist will practice. We ask whether the role calls for Interstate Medical Licensure Compact participation or separately issued licenses. Your organization verifies licensure, privileges, and practice authority before a start date.

  • Review American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certification. ABPN certification is a useful credential signal, not a substitute for your own review. We ask which patient populations and care settings shaped the physician’s recent practice.
  • Separate inpatient, outpatient, and telepsychiatry experience. We ask how the physician spends a rounding block or visit session, who joins care discussions, and what notes, orders, or follow-up work remain afterward.
  • Discuss controlled-substance prescribing as it relates to your opening. We ask about state licenses, DEA registration where applicable, prescription monitoring program use, refill records, and experience working under employer policies. Your legal and clinical teams decide whether the background fits.
  • Ask about electronic record work in detail. Which notes did the physician complete personally? How did they reconcile medications, review messages, sign orders, and close charts? System training is expected, but chart completion habits should be clear.
  • Clarify call and handoff work before interviews begin. We ask about overnight call, weekend coverage, urgent messages, hospital handoffs, and backup support. A physician may seek fewer after-hours duties; that is useful information, not a defect.
Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

We recruit psychiatrists from psychiatry residency programs, community mental health centers, state and federal healthcare facilities, and telepsychiatry platforms. Early-career physicians may seek more independence, a defined patient population, or a different mix of hospital and clinic work after training.

Experienced psychiatrists may consider a move because their schedule, administrative work, geography, leadership, or patient mix has changed. We do not assume the reason. We ask what they want more or less of and whether your opening is a practical match.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is treating ABPN certification as proof that a physician can cover your setting. Ask about recent admissions, clinic panels, remote visits, and decisions the physician made personally. Another is leaving controlled-substance duties vague. A psychiatrist may have strong experience but lack the licenses, registration, or recent prescribing background your model calls for.

03

Discussing call after the final interview. State the frequency, after-hours expectations, backup plan, and whether call includes evaluations, refill review, or patient messages.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us the care setting, patient population, clinic or rounding schedule, call duties, remote-work model, and states involved. We discuss work history, ABPN status, licenses, controlled-substance background, documentation habits, and reasons for considering a change. You interview, credential, assess clinical fit, and set employment terms.

Questions

Can you help with a psychiatrist practicing in several states?

Yes, when a physician’s licensure aligns with the states in your model. We ask about active licenses, IMLC status where relevant, and controlled-substance prescribing authority. Your organization confirms what the role permits before work begins. Ask what fills the physician’s time between scheduled encounters.

Do you recruit adult psychiatrists, inpatient psychiatrists, and telepsychiatrists?

Yes: adult psychiatrists, inpatient psychiatrists, and telepsychiatrists can describe very different workdays. We ask whether your opening centers on rounds, office visits, remote appointments, or a defined combination before we search.

Is ABPN certification needed for every psychiatrist opening?

Your organization decides which credentials it will accept. We screen for ABPN certification and report the result, but it does not replace your license review, credentialing process, or clinical interview.

How do you assess telepsychiatry background?

We ask about remote evaluations, follow-up visits, charting, patient communication, and work across jurisdictions. We also ask what support the physician had for scheduling, technology, messages, and escalation during a remote encounter.

What if we need coverage before a permanent hire?

We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. Per diem means placement into your own pool, not individual-shift coverage.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us what the psychiatrist will do from the first appointment or round through handoff. We will screen for that work and introduce physicians you choose to assess.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
