What does this hire really come down to?
A locum tenens PMHNP may conduct evaluations, manage medication visits, address refill decisions, and document each encounter. Your hiring decision should match that daily work to recent practice, state license coverage, and the rules governing your assignment.
Start with the care model. Outpatient coverage can involve intake assessments, scheduled follow-ups, portal messages, refill requests, and coordination with therapists or primary care. Inpatient coverage can involve admissions, rounds, discharge input, and prescriber handoffs. A clinician strong in one setting may need a different recent background for the other.
Then define what happens when the schedule changes. Ask who reviews urgent messages, who handles absent patients, who signs off on pending orders, and who answers a prescribing question outside scheduled visits. We ask candidates how they handled comparable decisions, rather than assuming a temporary assignment has the same routines as their last role.
What do we ask candidates about?
- PMHNP-BC certification. We verify active PMHNP-BC certification through ANCC. We ask what work the clinician has performed recently under that credential, including diagnostic evaluations, medication management, therapy work, or a combination.
- State license. The PMHNP needs an active, unrestricted license in the state where the patient receives care. For telepsychiatry, we ask which states the clinician can serve and whether any license history needs your review.
- DEA and prescribing rules. We screen DEA details relevant to the assignment and ask about recent controlled-substance prescribing. Your organization confirms the federal, state, payer, and telehealth prescribing rules that apply before the clinician sees patients.
- Setting match. We ask whether recent work was inpatient or outpatient psychiatry. For outpatient roles, we discuss new evaluations, follow-ups, referral decisions, and missed appointments. For inpatient roles, we discuss rounds, discharge documentation, and transfer communication.
- Documentation and technology. We ask which electronic records and telehealth platforms the PMHNP has used. We also ask how they finish same-day notes, track refill messages, resolve unsigned orders, and hand off open items when your templates differ.
- Assignment boundaries. We confirm dates, schedule, age groups, diagnostic mix, call duties, visit types, and available contacts. We also ask why the clinician wants temporary work now, such as a planned schedule change, multistate practice interest, or preference for defined engagements.
We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.
Where do we look, and why would they move?
We recruit from outpatient psychiatry practices, telepsychiatry groups, and PMHNPs with multistate licenses. Some clinicians consider locum work after a permanent role changes, when they want a defined engagement, or when they want exposure to another practice model.
Candidates often compare the workday as closely as the rate. They ask how referrals are screened, who handles portal traffic, when schedules are released, and whether record access is ready. Direct answers help both sides judge the assignment before a commitment.
Which mistakes stall the search?
Describing the opening as general psychiatry without naming inpatient, outpatient, telepsychiatry, age groups, or substance-use work.
Waiting until after selection to explain visit length, note completion, refill workflow, or call coverage.
Beginning internal credentialing after a verbal choice, then finding a license, DEA, platform, or scope question that needs review.

What do employers ask us?
How can we judge whether a PMHNP fits our patient mix?
Ask about the most recent comparable work, including age groups, diagnoses, visit types, and prescribing decisions. If your patients raise urgent medication or substance-use questions, ask who handled them and when another clinician became involved.
Can an outpatient PMHNP cover inpatient work?
That depends on recent experience with the actual inpatient duties. A strong outpatient prescriber may have limited recent work with rounds, admission evaluations, discharge coordination, or inpatient charting.
What should we cover for a telepsychiatry assignment?
Ask which platforms the PMHNP has used and where patients will be physically located. Review your procedures for identity checks, emergency contacts, connection failures, record access, and telehealth prescribing before appointments are scheduled.
What are the financial terms for locum coverage?
For temporary or other needs, describe the arrangement so we can discuss whether we can help. The written agreement states the assignment and financial terms. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Can a locum PMHNP later join our per diem pool?
Possibly, if both sides want that arrangement and you complete your own review. Per diem means placement into your organization’s own pool, not coverage of individual shifts through a separate arrangement.
What should you send us about this role?
Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.
Tell us what the PMHNP will do from the first appointment through final chart review. We will screen credentials, work history, availability, and relevant work habits for that assignment.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
