The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A locum cardiologist, gastroenterologist, oncologist, or nephrologist cannot be selected from specialty credentials alone. We ask what happens during your uncovered sessions, who handles overnight questions, and which services remain available. That defines the physician background worth considering before you review schedules or availability.

Start with the work you cannot defer. Cardiology coverage may involve inpatient consults without invasive procedures. GI coverage may combine clinic, endoscopy, and emergency consultations. Oncology may involve ongoing treatment oversight, while nephrology may include dialysis rounds and inpatient consults. Each assignment needs an explicit boundary around procedures and decisions.

Then map responsibility between visits. If a physician leaves after a short block, who receives pending pathology, laboratory results, and patient messages? Ask candidates how they document unresolved decisions and transfer follow-up. A physician's availability is useful only when your service can support the proposed handoff.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • License and specialty background: Ask, “Which active physician licenses do you hold, and what specialty training and board status can you document?” We screen the stated credentials against your assignment. Your facility verifies them through its credentialing process.
  • Recent scope: Ask, “Which consults, clinic visits, or procedures have you personally handled recently?” Useful answers separate independent work from supervised experience and identify duties the physician would not accept.
  • Procedural fit: Ask, “Which procedures would you seek privileges for here?” For GI or procedural cardiology, look for specific procedures and recent supporting experience, not a broad assertion that the physician does everything.
  • Service support: Ask, “What nursing, pharmacy, dialysis, infusion, or procedural support would you need?” The answer should expose practical dependencies before you offer dates or define the coverage block.
  • Call boundaries: Ask, “How would you handle an overnight consult outside your agreed scope?” Look for clear escalation, transfer communication, and documentation rather than an assumption that every service is available.
  • Continuity: Ask, “What would your last-day handoff include?” A useful answer names pending results, unfinished consultations, treatment decisions awaiting review, and the clinician receiving responsibility.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

We consider physicians with backgrounds in hospital specialty services, multispecialty groups, independent specialty practices, academic services, and established locum work. The relevant pool depends on your assignment. A clinic-heavy background does not automatically match inpatient call, and consult experience does not establish procedural readiness.

Some physicians may seek defined coverage blocks between permanent roles, after reducing practice hours, or alongside another appointment. We ask about scheduling conflicts and existing obligations. Interest in temporary work does not establish availability for your full block.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Requesting “full specialty coverage” without listing excluded procedures, transfer options, and who answers questions when the locum physician is off duty.

02

Treating board certification as a substitute for recent experience with the particular service, equipment, or procedures you want covered.

03

Booking dates before identifying the receiving clinician for results and follow-up after the assignment ends.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

Can a cardiologist cover consults without covering catheterization?

Yes, if your service defines a consult-only assignment and has another route for procedural needs. Specify echocardiography interpretation, inpatient rounding, outpatient visits, and call separately so candidates can confirm their actual scope.

What should we settle before requesting GI coverage?

List clinic sessions, endoscopy work, emergency consultations, and any advanced procedures separately. State which procedures require separate coverage and what anesthesia, nursing, and equipment support will be available.

How should oncology coverage address patients already receiving treatment?

Define who reviews treatment plans, authorizes orders within facility policy, and responds to patient concerns. Ask how the physician would review existing records and hand unresolved decisions back to the ongoing oncology team.

What distinguishes nephrology clinic coverage from dialysis coverage?

Clinic visits, dialysis rounds, and inpatient consultations involve different schedules and support arrangements. Identify dialysis locations, travel between sites, rounding expectations, and after-hours responsibility rather than treating them as one interchangeable assignment.

Can a locum physician start while procedural privileges are pending?

Your facility decides what work is permitted after its review; availability alone does not authorize procedures. Do not schedule procedural duties until the relevant privileges and arrangements are confirmed.
