The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

An open dosimetry role can leave prescriptions waiting, plans returning for revisions, and physicists carrying extra review work. You need someone who can review available imaging, set up a plan, select beam geometry, optimize dose, review results, and explain changes to physicians and physicists.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Planning-system familiarity is only a starting point. Ask what the candidate personally does after receiving a prescription and contours. A credible answer covers plan setup, beam arrangement, optimization objectives, dose-distribution review, and documentation after feedback. Listen for how they handle a conflict between target coverage and dose limits for nearby organs.

Match the search to the work waiting at your center. You may need help with plans that return from peer review, a growing IMRT workload, or SBRT cases with small targets near sensitive structures. Ask what the candidate does when contours change after optimization. They should describe recalculation, review of the revised dose distribution, communication with the clinical team, and return for approval.

Screening

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify current MDCB CMD certification through the board registry. We ask candidates to confirm their status and describe their prior planning duties. Your organization completes its own credentialing and clinical assessment before making a hiring decision. We ask which planning systems candidates use most, including Eclipse or RayStation.

  • Questions cover their direct work with plan setup, beam arrangement, optimization, dose review, plan revisions, and changes following software updates.
  • We separate IMRT experience from general planning exposure. Candidates describe a plan where target coverage competed with normal-tissue objectives, what they changed during optimization, and what they brought to physics or physician review.
  • We discuss SBRT separately. Candidates explain their work with available image sets, motion-management information supplied by the clinical team, treatment geometry, and plan changes when a small target is close to an organ at risk.
  • We explore contour-review judgment without replacing your technical assessment. We ask how a candidate reviews CT or MRI datasets, recognizes an unclear anatomical boundary, and returns the question to the appropriate physician or physicist.
  • We test peer-review habits. Candidates explain what they prepare for review, how they respond when physics identifies a geometry or calculation concern, and how they record the correction before final physician approval.

These are recruiting discussions about experience and stated credentials, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Your organization completes formal credentialing, license and privilege checks, and the hiring decision.

Sourcing

Where do we find them, and why would they move?

Our search reaches cancer center dosimetrists and professionals from remote dosimetry groups. Cancer center candidates may have direct experience discussing plan changes with physicians and physicists. Remote candidates may be used to documenting handoffs, clear assumptions, and reviewing information received from another site.

People move for specific work reasons. A dosimetrist may want more IMRT or SBRT exposure, a different planning platform, a larger role in plan review, remote work, or a location change. We ask what prompted the search, what they would leave behind, and what would make a permanent move sensible. If a counteroffer is possible, we ask whether it addresses the original reason for leaving.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

A common mistake is treating Eclipse or RayStation exposure as proof of equivalent planning judgment. Ask which modules they used, which plan types they handled, and when they requested physics input. Another is combining IMRT and SBRT into one interview question. A candidate may have substantial IMRT experience but limited SBRT exposure, especially around motion review and small-field geometry.

03

Skipping discussion of revisions. A planner may produce an acceptable first draft but struggle to document feedback, revise the plan, or return a concern for review.

Role-specific search plan

How would we run the search for this opening?

Tell us your planning system, primary treatment techniques, review sequence, and the points where plans commonly return for changes. We review CMD status, work history, planning-system exposure, and reasons for considering a move. You meet candidates whose background fits the search.

01

Define the planning work

We turn that information into role-specific screening questions.

02

Screen for direct evidence

We ask candidates to describe their own IMRT, SBRT, contour-review, peer-review, and revision work.

03

Interview and hire

You conduct final technical and clinical assessment, complete credentialing, and select whom to hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Questions

Do all Medical Dosimetrists need MDCB CMD certification?

CMD certification is a core credential we screen for in this search, and we verify current status through the MDCB registry. Your organization decides which credentials and qualifications it will accept for the position. Healthcare Headhunters recruits permanent Medical Dosimetrists on a contingency basis.

How do we separate Eclipse or RayStation familiarity from real planning experience?

Ask what the candidate personally did in the system. They should explain setup, optimization choices, dose review, revisions, and how they handled a question raised during physics or physician review.

Should we ask for both IMRT and SBRT experience?

Match the interview to the work your center will assign. If the role regularly handles SBRT, ask for direct SBRT planning experience and explore it separately from broader IMRT work.

Can you recruit a remote Medical Dosimetrist?

Yes: remote dosimetry groups are part of the source pool for this search. Before hiring, confirm your remote-work process, system access approach, credentialing steps, and plan-review responsibilities.

What are the payment terms for a permanent hire?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Our written agreement explains the placement fee and replacement terms for standard searches.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us your planning system, IMRT and SBRT mix, and plan-review sequence. We will focus the permanent search on Medical Dosimetrists who can discuss the work your team needs completed.

How long will it take to see a short list?

That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.

What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.

What do we not do in a standard permanent search?

We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
