The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

Your surgeons need more than general PA experience. You need a clinician who can retract, handle tissue, close wounds, splint injuries, and manage follow-up visits while keeping the surgeon informed about questions that need review.

The best interview answers follow the sequence of an actual case. Ask what the PA does after incision, how they maintain exposure, which closures they perform, and how they respond when the field may no longer be sterile. Listen for a clear account of communication with the surgeon, scrub team, and circulating staff.

The clinic portion needs the same scrutiny as the OR portion. Ask how the candidate handles post-operative visits, joint injections, splinting, imaging discussions, and documentation before moving to a scheduled case. A candidate may prefer one setting, but your opening may need both.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • Confirm current PA-C certification and active state medical board licensure. We ask about active status, restrictions, and whether prior work aligns with first assist scope in your jurisdiction. Your organization confirms licensure, privileges, and local scope before a start.
  • Review first assist experience by procedure type. We ask about retraction, deep exposure, tissue handling, and vessel harvesting when relevant to your surgeons. Broad surgical exposure does not automatically show readiness for your case mix.
  • Discuss sterile-field responsibilities in detail. Candidates should describe how they set up, protect the field, raise a concern, and respond when another team member questions sterility during a procedure.
  • Ask for closure examples that match the work you assign. We cover layered closure, suture selection, wound checks, and whether the PA closed independently within the approved scope of a former practice.
  • Test the clinic side with practical questions. We ask about joint injections, splinting, post-operative assessments, imaging review, patient instructions, and when the PA brings the surgeon into a visit.
  • Clarify the actual schedule. We ask about early starts, cases that run past the block, clinic coverage, and changes that move the PA between locations. This shows whether the candidate has worked a similar split.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

We recruit from orthopedic groups and surgical departments where PAs divide time among operating rooms, procedure visits, and follow-up clinics. Some candidates consider a move after a surgeon retires, their role becomes clinic-only, or they want a narrower orthopedic or surgical focus.

Military-trained PAs can be another source pool. We ask what procedures, clinic decisions, and team responsibilities they handled. Training history alone does not establish readiness for your service line, surgeon preferences, or hospital privileges.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Hiring a generalist PA based on years in practice without confirming first assist cases, closures, injections, and splinting.

02

Interviewing only for OR work, then finding that the candidate dislikes recurring post-operative visits, clinic documentation, or injection work.

03

Treating an active license as full clearance before your team completes credentialing, privilege review, and clinical assessment.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

Do candidates need PA-C certification and a state license?

Yes: we screen for current PA-C certification and active state medical board licensure. Your organization confirms license status, scope, privileges, and any local credentials before hiring.

How much first assist experience should we seek?

Match the background to your case mix. If your surgeons need joint reconstruction, arthroscopy, spine exposure, or vessel harvesting, ask for direct work in those cases instead of accepting broad surgical experience.

Can a PA who prefers the OR still cover clinic work?

Possibly, but ask direct questions before advancing them. A suitable candidate should explain post-operative visits, injections, splinting, imaging discussions, documentation, and when they seek surgeon input.

How should we compare two PAs with similar surgical backgrounds?

Compare their judgment during ordinary work, not only their technical list. Ask how they handle an unclear post-operative instruction, a wound concern, or a schedule change that shifts them from clinic into the OR.

What are the engagement terms?

Permanent/direct-hire recruitment is our core service across clinical, operational and leadership roles. If you need a temporary or other arrangement, describe the need so we can discuss whether we can help. Responsibilities and terms must be confirmed separately for that engagement. Your organization retains clinical assessment and credentialing responsibility.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.
