What does this hire really come down to?
A Progressive Care Nurse works between ICU and medical-surgical nursing. During a shift, the RN follows telemetry, reassesses respiratory effort, manages approved drips, responds to alarms, documents changes, and reports concerns through your hospital’s escalation process. Healthcare Headhunters recruits permanent PCU, Step-Down, and Intermediate Care RNs for your team.
A title does not explain the actual assignment. Another may receive post-operative patients, stroke patients, or ICU transfers needing frequent reassessment.
We ask candidates about specific decisions, not only equipment listed on a résumé. After a telemetry alarm, what did they assess at the bedside? Which change led them to call a provider? How did they hand off an unresolved concern? Their answers show whether they connect monitor findings, assessment, charting, and escalation.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Active RN license: we verify an active license for the state where your facility operates and ask about pending renewal or endorsement issues. Your credentialing team makes the final licensure decision. BLS and ACLS status. We confirm current credentials and ask how the nurse has worked within emergency-response roles on a step-down unit.
- ACLS is relevant when a cardiac or respiratory event occurs before additional responders arrive.
- Titratable drips. We ask which medications the nurse has managed, whether dose changes followed standing orders or provider direction, and how reassessment was charted. We compare that experience with the drips your unit permits.
- BiPAP and non-invasive ventilation. We ask about monitoring tolerance, responding to alarms, checking mask fit and skin, tracking respiratory changes, and reporting a patient who appears to be tiring.
- Telemetry and decline recognition. Candidates explain what they review beyond a rhythm strip, such as symptoms, blood-pressure trends, oxygen needs, mental-status changes, and post-operative findings. Your leaders can test judgment with their own scenario.
- PCCN history. PCCN may show focused progressive-care study, but it is not a universal legal mandate. We note whether it is current or previously held, then weigh it with recent bedside work and your preference.
These are recruiting discussions about experience and stated credentials, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Your organization completes formal credentialing, license and privilege checks, and the hiring decision.
Where do we find them, and why would they move?
Our search pool includes RNs from step-down and intermediate care units. They may know frequent monitoring, ICU admissions, discharge preparation, and handoffs to medical-surgical floors. We still ask what each nurse personally managed because unit labels differ. We also speak with ICU nurses seeking lower acuity and travel nurses seeking a permanent role.
A shorter commute, schedule change, charge support, or a permanent home after travel can also prompt a move.
Which mistakes stall the search?
A common mistake is selecting an ICU-only candidate without asking why they want PCU work. The nurse may expect interventions or assignments that differ from your recovery-focused role. Another is assuming every nurse who lists drips has managed your medication mix. Ask which drugs they titrated, what guided dose changes, and when they called the provider.
Using a vague culture interview. Ask how the candidate gives a change-of-condition report and handles disagreement about escalation.】【:】【“】【
How would we run the search for this opening?
Tell us about patient groups, telemetry expectations, approved drips, BiPAP use, schedule, and transfer process. We conduct targeted outreach, review credentials and work history, and discuss reasons for moving. You complete interviews, references, credentialing, and clinical assessment. ICU experience may bring strong assessment habits, while travel work may show adaptability across charting systems.

Do you recruit PCU, Step-Down, and Intermediate Care RNs under one search?
Yes: these titles often cover related work, but patient mix and permitted therapies vary by hospital. We screen against your unit details rather than the title alone. One unit may manage cardiac patients on antiarrhythmics and BiPAP. Tell us which patients arrive, which therapies stay on the unit, and what prompts a transfer request.
Is PCCN necessary for every candidate?
No: PCCN can be a preferred credential, but it is not a universal legal mandate. We can screen for it while reviewing recent progressive-care experience.
Can an ICU nurse be a good PCU hire?
Yes, if the nurse wants the actual PCU assignment. We ask about frequent reassessment, recovery planning, patient education, and the intervention level available on your unit.
What do you ask about BiPAP and titratable drips?
We ask for recent examples covering monitoring, charting, dose changes, and escalation decisions. We then compare that work with your unit-approved therapies and policies.
Can you help if we need temporary coverage instead of a permanent hire?
Permanent/direct-hire recruitment is our core service across clinical, operational and leadership roles. If you need a temporary or other arrangement, describe the need so we can discuss whether we can help. Responsibilities and terms must be confirmed separately for that engagement. Your organization retains clinical assessment and credentialing responsibility. Per diem placement adds a clinician to your own pool, not an individual shift.
What should you send us about this role?
Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.
Tell Healthcare Headhunters what your PCU nurses manage on a typical shift. We will begin a permanent search based on those duties and your hiring process.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What happens beyond the introduction?
We explain our recommendation in writing and flag what your team still needs to assess. We gather interview feedback, resolve practical questions and support offer discussions. The goal is the right person for the work, not simply a shortlist.

What are the fee and payment terms?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed agreement sets the fee and when it is due, along with the placement terms. We agree those terms before the search starts and before any candidate introductions. Temporary or contract coverage is a separate arrangement.
How long will it take to see a short list?
That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.
What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?
We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.
What are the replacement terms?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.
What do we not do in a standard permanent search?
We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
