The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A Registered Dental Hygienist does more than complete prophy appointments. Your hire must assess oral health, capture accurate findings, take images within office protocols, educate patients, and leave clear records for the dentist and front office. We screen for the pace and clinical judgment your schedule actually asks of an RDH.

First, decide what a full hygiene column looks like in your office. Some schedules mix recalls, periodontal maintenance, scaling and root planing, new-patient records, and same-day changes. Others protect longer education visits or build time for the dentist to review findings. A hygienist who succeeds in one model may dislike the other.

We ask candidates how they handle a late arrival, an overdue periodontal chart, or a patient who needs more discussion before treatment acceptance. Their answers show whether they can protect appointment time without rushing documentation or patient communication. Your team completes clinical assessment and credentialing; we screen work history, credentials, and fit before an introduction.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • State RDH license. We confirm an active state Registered Dental Hygienist license and ask candidates about any limits that affect the duties in your office. You make the final board review and credentialing decision.
  • Local anesthesia permit. Where your state allows hygienists to administer local anesthesia, we ask whether the candidate holds the applicable permit and how recently they used those duties. A permit is not assumed to be needed in every state or practice.
  • Nitrous oxide permit. Where state rules allow RDHs to administer nitrous oxide, we confirm the relevant permit and discuss the office’s expected role. We do not treat this certificate as a universal legal obligation.
  • Periodontal charting. We ask how the hygienist records probing depths, bleeding points, recession, mobility, furcation findings, and home-care discussions. We also ask what they do when findings differ from a prior chart.
  • Patient load and appointment mix. Candidates describe a recent day, including recall visits, periodontal maintenance, deep scaling appointments, and late patients. We ask how they document, communicate with the dentist, and reset the room between visits.
  • Digital tools. We discuss experience with dental software, digital radiography sensors, and intraoral images. Instead of claiming fluency from a résumé, we ask what the candidate entered, reviewed, and flagged during an actual hygiene appointment.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

Our search can reach hygienists from general dental practices, periodontal practices, dental service organizations, and CODA-accredited hygiene programs. Each source pool brings a different work history. A periodontal-practice candidate may have deeper maintenance experience, while a graduate may need more office-specific coaching.

People consider a move for many reasons. They may want a shorter commute, a different appointment mix, a more predictable schedule, or a practice where the dentist’s communication style suits them. We ask what prompted the search and what would make an offer worth accepting.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Hiring for speed without asking how the candidate handles incomplete periodontal records or a patient who needs extra explanation before leaving.

02

Assuming every licensed RDH can perform anesthesia or nitrous duties in your state, or holds the permits your office uses.

03

Waiting until the interview to describe the actual mix of recalls, periodontal maintenance, imaging, and dentist handoffs on a normal day.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

How do you screen an RDH’s periodontal experience?

We ask candidates to describe their charting process and a typical mix of periodontal maintenance and scaling appointments. We also ask how they alert the dentist to changed findings or incomplete records.

Do all hygienists need local anesthesia and nitrous permits?

No: state scope rules and your office duties determine whether those permits matter. We screen for them where applicable, while you confirm scope and credentialing for your practice.

Can you recruit a newer hygiene graduate?

Yes: CODA-accredited hygiene programs are one source pool. We will discuss the training, documentation review, and schedule support you can offer before presenting early-career candidates.

How do you handle a counteroffer after discussing schedule and appointment mix?

We ask why the person began looking and what they want to change. If a counteroffer appears, you can discuss your role’s schedule, appointment mix, compensation, and office expectations directly.

How do fees work for an RDH search?

Permanent contingency placement carries no upfront fee, and you pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell Healthcare Headhunters how your hygiene column runs, which permits matter, and where past hires struggled. We will screen for those details before you spend time interviewing.
