  • Addiction Medical Director
The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

Your medical director may review admissions, advise prescribers, address medication questions, respond to escalations, and set medical policy. You need a physician who knows which decisions belong in the chart, which need staff direction, and which need immediate physician involvement.

Define the job before you interview. State who supervises prescribers, who approves medical policies, how after-hours calls reach the physician, and whether direct patient care is part of the post. Candidates need a clear account of their authority and the decisions that remain with ownership or administration.

We look beyond a medical title. If a nurse practitioner reports a concerning change after admission, we ask what the physician reviews, who receives direction, and how the final plan is documented. That question shows whether the candidate can give usable guidance while maintaining physician accountability.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • State physician licensure and board credentials. We confirm an active physician license for your state and review current board certification. For addiction-focused roles, we discuss addiction certification when it matches your program scope. Your team completes credentialing and its own clinical assessment.
  • Inpatient or residential oversight. We ask what the physician handled personally in a 24-hour setting, such as admission review, transfer decisions, after-hours consultation, chart review, and escalation support. Outpatient experience may add value, but it does not alone show readiness for residential oversight.
  • Medication for addiction treatment experience. We ask about the candidate’s role in MAT program policy, prescriber support, documentation review, and responses to dosing or monitoring questions. This separates direct program leadership from limited consultation or referral work.
  • Documentation and audit work. We ask how the candidate identified incomplete orders, late signatures, inconsistent assessments, or unclear treatment plans. We also discuss their role during payer reviews, state surveys, or internal chart audits, without assuming every program uses the same process.
  • Interdisciplinary leadership. We ask how the physician works with nurse practitioners, nursing leaders, therapists, and administrators when views differ on a high-risk case. Candidates should explain who makes the final medical decision, how that decision is recorded, and how staff receive the direction.
  • Actual time commitment. We confirm whether the physician seeks a medical directorship with direct care duties, a leadership post, or a limited advisory arrangement. We ask about onsite presence, call coverage, committees, chart review, and outside work that could conflict with your schedule.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

Our source pool includes psychiatrists and addiction medicine physicians. We speak with physicians from hospital behavioral health services, inpatient and residential programs, academic settings, and multi-site behavioral health organizations. Their backgrounds may suit psychiatric leadership, addiction leadership, or a combined role.

Physicians may explore a move when they have little authority over medical policy, their administrative load exceeds the agreed role, or they want a different leadership path. Some seek a smaller organization, a program-building opportunity, or a location change. We ask why they are considering a move and compare that answer with your actual role.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Hiring a physician whose recent work was consultative, then expecting daily staff direction, chart accountability, and after-hours clinical judgment.

02

Leaving reporting lines unclear when an administrator, clinical director, and medical director may give conflicting direction.

03

Treating addiction certification as proof of residential leadership without asking about admissions, transfers, and physician escalation calls.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

Do we need a psychiatrist or an addiction medicine physician?

The answer depends on your services, physician duties, and the credentials connected to the role. We discuss whether psychiatric oversight, addiction medicine experience, or both are needed before outreach begins.

Should this director provide direct patient care?

Some programs need a director who also sees patients, while others need physician oversight and consultation. Describe expected clinical hours, chart review, call coverage, and committee work early.

How do you assess residential experience?

We ask for specific accounts of admission reviews, staff consultation, transfer decisions, and after-hours escalations. We also ask what the physician owned personally rather than what a larger team handled.

Can you recruit for a part-time medical director?

Yes, when the schedule, scope, and authority are clearly defined. A part-time post still needs a realistic coverage plan and clear expectations for documentation, meetings, and staff support.

Can you provide interim coverage instead of a permanent hire?

Permanent/direct-hire recruitment is our core service across clinical, operational and leadership roles. If you need a temporary or other arrangement, describe the need so we can discuss whether we can help. Responsibilities and terms must be confirmed separately for that engagement. Your organization retains clinical assessment and credentialing responsibility. Per diem placement adds a clinician to your own pool rather than filling individual shifts.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell Healthcare Headhunters what your medical director must own, where they may advise, and where physician leadership is currently missing. We will begin with the work and identify physicians who can perform it.

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
