What does this hire really come down to?
A BCaBA can support behavior assessment, treatment implementation, data review, and technician coaching under BCBA supervision. The credential does not authorize independent practice. Before you open the search, define which clients this person will support, where services occur, and who provides supervision.
We screen for that assignment rather than treating every ABA background as interchangeable.
Start with the work between client sessions. Your BCaBA may review session records, observe technicians, prepare materials, and flag changes for the supervising BCBA. Ask how candidates separate an implementation problem from a concern about the plan itself. A useful answer describes observations, data, and consultation, not an unsupported decision to change treatment.
The supervision arrangement matters as much as the caseload description. Identify the supervising BCBA, access to consultation, and how observations fit into the schedule. If services span homes, clinics, or schools, discuss travel and communication expectations. Someone moving from one setting may need orientation to another setting's documentation, caregiver contact, and team routines.
What do we check before you see anyone?
Confirm active BCaBA certification through the certifying body's verification process. Check any license required for the assigned jurisdiction and duties. Ask about certification status, renewal dates, and supervision arrangements rather than accepting initials on a résumé. Ask, "When session data looked different from direct observation, what did you check?"
- Look for review of definitions, recording methods, and implementation consistency. The candidate should explain what they shared with the supervising BCBA.
- Ask, "How did you coach a technician who missed a step in a written plan?" Useful evidence includes observation, specific feedback, practice, and a follow-up check. Listen for respectful correction without unapproved plan changes.
- Ask, "What would you do if a caregiver requested a change during a session?" A useful answer separates listening and documenting from clinical authority. It explains when and how the supervising BCBA becomes involved.
- Ask, "How would you respond if behavior differed from the written plan's description?" Look for adherence to established safety procedures, prompt communication, and objective documentation. You conduct the clinical assessment; we examine the candidate's account of their actions.
- Ask, "How did you manage notes, technician questions, and scheduled supervision on the same day?" Look for an organized account of deadlines and escalation. Confirm that their previous schedule resembles the assignment you are offering.
These are recruiting discussions about experience and stated credentials, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Your organization completes formal credentialing, license and privilege checks, and the hiring decision.
Where do we find them, and why would they move?
We look for candidates from ABA clinics, home-based service providers, school-based programs, and other behavioral service organizations employing supervised assistant analysts. These backgrounds can offer different exposure to caregiver communication, technician coaching, and documentation. We ask what candidates actually performed, not just which setting employed them.
Possible reasons for a move include more consistent supervision, less travel, a different client population, or clearer administrative time. None is assumed.
Which mistakes stall the search?
Do not advertise independent clinical ownership for a BCaBA position. State which decisions belong to the supervising BCBA and how the assistant raises questions during the workday. Do not count every scheduled hour as direct service. Describe time for observations, records, coaching, and supervision so candidates can assess the actual weekly assignment.
Do not equate certification with experience across every client population. Ask about ages served, communication needs, settings, and the candidate's specific responsibilities within the supervising team.
How would we run the search for this opening?
You describe the caseload, service sites, schedule, technician responsibilities, and BCBA supervision. We screen credentials, work history, and examples of supervised practice. Compare shortlisted candidates on their experience reviewing session records, observing technicians, and bringing concerns to a supervising BCBA.
Define the supervised assignment
We clarify credentials and any required license, then distinguish essential experience from skills your team can teach.
Review evidence of fit
You interview candidates using your documentation and coaching expectations. Your team completes its own credentialing and clinical assessment before making a hiring decision.

How can we assess technician coaching during an interview?
Present a hypothetical example of a technician departing from a written procedure. Ask the candidate to explain observation, feedback, practice, documentation, and when they would consult the BCBA. We ask candidates to explain their interest and compare it with your schedule, service locations, and supervisory structure before presenting them.
Can a BCaBA manage our ABA cases without BCBA supervision?
No: BCaBA practice requires BCBA supervision. Describe the assistant's duties and the supervising BCBA's responsibilities before interviewing, particularly for assessment work and proposed treatment changes.
Should we hire from a clinic for a home-based assignment?
That background may transfer, but ask about working outside a clinic's immediate team support. Discuss travel, caregiver conversations, access to consultation, and where documentation gets completed.
What should we verify beyond BCaBA certification?
Check any required license and confirm that the proposed duties fit applicable practice rules. Also review population experience, references, and the supervision arrangement through your credentialing process.
How should we describe a role split between sessions and coaching?
Show candidates a representative weekly schedule, including direct service, observations, records, and supervision. Explain how schedule changes are approved when technician support competes with planned client work.
What should you send us about this role?
Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.
Tell us where your BCaBA will work, who will supervise, and which coaching duties need coverage. We will screen for experience observing technicians and reporting implementation concerns to the supervising BCBA.
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What are the fee and payment terms?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed agreement sets the fee and when it is due, along with the placement terms. We agree those terms before the search starts and before any candidate introductions. Temporary or contract coverage is a separate arrangement.
How long will it take to see a short list?
That depends on the job, schedule, available people, and what your employer can offer. We discuss those constraints before outreach and update you as candidates respond. We do not promise a fixed shortlist date. We check the job brief before arranging interviews. Tell us which parts of the role you can change.
What if a candidate receives a counteroffer?
We ask why the person wants to move and discuss competing decisions before an offer. A counteroffer can still change their choice. Keep the duties and offer clear rather than assuming more money settles every concern. Tell us early if parts of your offer cannot change, so the candidate hears it from us first.
What are the replacement terms?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Ask us to walk through those terms before you sign, so you know how a replacement would work for your opening and who would start it.
What do we not do in a standard permanent search?
We do not bill standard contingency search by the hour or simply repost your job. Temporary coverage is a separate arrangement. Any retainer or different engagement must be agreed, not assumed. Tell us early if you need coverage while the permanent search runs.
