  • Revenue Cycle Director
  • Revenue Cycle Manager
The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A Director of Revenue Cycle must see the full claim path, not just a month-end report. You need someone who can ask why eligibility failed, why an authorization was absent, why a charge did not post, or why secondary billing stopped. We screen for leaders who turn those findings into assigned daily work.

A strong director separates a front-end error from a coding, charge capture, claim-edit, or follow-up problem. They review AR days, denial rate, and cash results together. Then they decide whether patient access, documentation, coding, billing, or payer follow-up needs attention first.

This leader must make tradeoffs. Closing old balances may improve aging, while recurring denials keep adding new AR. We ask how a candidate would divide staff attention between legacy cleanup and correcting the source of new denials. We also ask how they present findings to finance, operations, and clinical leaders without turning the review into blame.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • Ask for a front-to-back revenue cycle example. The candidate should cover eligibility, authorization, charge capture, coding, claim submission, payment posting, denials, appeals, and patient balances. We ask where they looked when cash fell short and what evidence changed the next action.
  • Review AR days, denial rate, and cash results in context. We ask for the metric, the payer or service-line issue behind it, the staff work assigned, and the later result. A dashboard alone does not show how someone directed the underlying work.
  • Test experience with Epic, Oracle Health, or athenaOne when one matches your billing system. We ask which reports, edits, and work queues they used. We also ask when they involved internal IT or a vendor, rather than assuming prior system use means sound judgment.
  • Explore documentation and coding oversight with concrete questions. We ask how the candidate found documentation patterns affecting coding or medical-necessity support, who reviewed the issue, and how feedback reached the relevant clinicians. Your organization completes its own credentialing and clinical assessment where applicable.
  • Discuss denials by payer, reason code, location, and service. We ask for a repeating denial, the test used to find its cause, and the resulting change in registration, documentation, coding, or follow-up. This separates active problem solving from reporting.
  • If you bill specialty procedures, ask about authorizations, medical-necessity documentation, modifiers, and payer-specific edits. We also ask how the candidate handled reimbursement policy changes while keeping routine claims moving and giving staff clear ownership.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

We recruit from PFS directors, revenue cycle managers, and RCM vendors. These source pools include leaders from hospital systems, provider groups, specialty practices, and advisory work. Their backgrounds can differ sharply in payer exposure, team scope, and direct ownership of results.

A PFS director may bring deep follow-up and cash-posting leadership. A revenue cycle manager may seek authority across the full claim path. Someone from an RCM vendor may want direct responsibility for internal decisions. People may also move for a different payer mix, broader scope, or closer access to operating leaders.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Hiring someone who improved one specialty area but cannot explain eligibility, authorization, coding edits, claims, and follow-up across the full cycle.

02

Treating vendor oversight as proof of analytics skill. Ask what the candidate personally reviewed before accepting a vendor recommendation or directing staff action.

03

Leaving operational leaders out of interviews. Patient access, coding, billing, and clinical leaders can test whether a report finding becomes a workable change.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

How should we measure a new director’s early work?

Start with a baseline for AR days, denial rate, cash results, aging buckets, and major denial reasons. Early work may include validating reports, assigning ownership, and testing causes before a metric moves.

Must the candidate know our exact EHR?

Experience with Epic, Oracle Health, or athenaOne can shorten training when you use one of those systems. Ask what reports, work queues, edits, and interfaces they used, not simply whether they logged into the platform.

How do we assess someone from a larger organization?

Ask what analysts, coding resources, staff, and vendor support they had. Then explain which reviews and decisions belong to this role at your organization. The candidate should be comfortable doing direct review when needed.

What if a finalist receives a counteroffer tied to payer-mix or reporting scope?

Ask early about compensation, reporting structure, scope, commute, and reasons for considering a move. If a counteroffer appears, revisit those reasons and your approved offer terms. Money may not be the only issue.

How does payment work for a permanent search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

Next step

What should you send us about this role?

Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.

Tell us where cash slows, which denials repeat, and which billing system your team uses. We will screen Director of Revenue Cycle candidates against that work.
