  • Chief Revenue Cycle Officer
  • SVP Revenue Cycle
The work behind the title

What does this hire really come down to?

A denial report alone will not tell you what to fix. You need a VP who can trace a rejected claim from payer response to registration, coding, charge capture, or documentation. We recruit leaders who ask which edit, handoff, or build choice created the avoidable rework.

This hire must balance cash performance with durable operating changes. A candidate may reduce aged accounts receivable by adding staff to follow-up queues, yet leave recurring authorization or coding defects untouched. Ask what they changed upstream, what they measured afterward, and who owned the correction.

The best fit depends on your operating model. A system with centralized billing may need a leader who sets common edits and escalation rules across hospitals. A decentralized model may need someone who can compare local variation, retain useful exceptions, and stop inconsistent practices that create denials.

Experience that matters

What do we ask candidates about?

  • HFMA CHFP or CRCR. These credentials can indicate formal revenue cycle training, but they are not a universal legal condition for this role. We confirm the credential when listed and ask how the candidate applies payer, reimbursement, and financial reporting knowledge in executive decisions.
  • Epic Resolute HB/PB work. We ask what the candidate personally directed in hospital and professional billing, such as workqueue logic, claim edits, charge routing, or reporting. We also ask where configuration changes created unintended downstream work and how they corrected it.
  • Enterprise AR and denial results. We ask for the baseline, the aging segments reviewed, and the denial categories selected for action. A strong answer separates clean-claim work, payer underpayments, denials, credit balances, and accounts needing focused follow-up.
  • Root-cause discipline. We ask how the executive distinguishes a front-end registration issue from a coding, documentation, authorization, or payer adjudication problem. They should explain how findings return to the accountable leader without turning every denial into a billing-office problem.
  • Outsourcing vendor management. We ask how they review vendor scorecards, sampling, escalation records, collections activity, and contract obligations. We look for leaders who can challenge a vendor’s results while retaining internal knowledge of payer behavior and workflow decisions.
  • Clinical and business-office partnership. We ask for an example of presenting documentation-related denial data to physician, nursing, case management, coding, or finance leaders. The candidate should explain the data used, the requested change, and how they checked whether the change reduced rework.

We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.

Finding people

Where do we look, and why would they move?

We recruit from system revenue cycle directors and RCM vendor executives. System leaders may bring experience with centralized business offices, multiple hospitals, payer escalation, and local operational variation. Vendor executives may bring detailed knowledge of account segmentation, client reporting, and outsourced team management.

People consider a move for different reasons. A director may want broader authority over hospital and professional billing. A vendor executive may want direct ownership of internal strategy. We test whether the candidate wants your scope, governance model, and onsite expectations rather than assuming a title change explains the move.

Avoid these

Which mistakes stall the search?

01

Hiring a dashboard presenter who cannot describe the specific edit, workflow, or ownership change behind improved AR or denial results.

02

Treating Epic Resolute experience as sufficient when the candidate has only received reports and never directed HB/PB build decisions.

03

Accepting vendor-management claims without asking how the candidate audited work quality, escalated misses, and protected internal payer knowledge.

Questions

What do employers ask us?

Is HFMA CHFP or CRCR mandatory for a VP of Revenue Cycle?

Not universally. It may be a preferred signal of revenue cycle education, while your organization may value direct enterprise results and Epic Resolute experience more heavily. We verify either credential when it appears in the search criteria.

How do you test whether a candidate improved denials rather than shifted work elsewhere?

We ask for the denial group, starting point, intervention, and follow-up measure. We also ask whether the work moved to another queue, increased manual review, or changed clean-claim performance.

What should we ask about Epic Resolute HB/PB?

Ask what the candidate owned versus what analysts or consultants performed. Useful questions cover edit changes, workqueue design, governance, testing, reporting, and how they handled a build change that produced an unwanted result.

How should we assess an executive from an RCM vendor?

Ask about their authority over client strategy, staff performance, quality sampling, and payer escalation. Then test whether they can lead internal departments and make tradeoffs when outsourced work is only one part of your model.

What are the payment terms for a permanent search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
