What jobs sit inside revenue cycle, reimbursement, and HIM hiring?
This family covers people who touch patient accounts from registration through final payment. On a workday, they review denials, coding edits, claim follow-up, charge capture, and record quality. They also connect access, coding, clinical documentation, billing, and contract review when the handoff breaks.
The right hire depends on where the work slows down. A director may own policy, staffing, and escalations. A manager may spend more time in queue review, staff coaching, and fixing delayed claims. We ask where the problem starts and who can approve process changes.
Who makes the main decisions in these roles?
VPs and directors usually own the budget path, staffing plan, and cross-department decisions. They decide when to change workflows, open a backlog project, or bring a payer issue to legal or finance. Controllers and finance leaders watch the numbers, close the books, and review revenue trends with department leaders.
Managers usually make the day-to-day calls. They assign work, review escalations, correct errors, and watch team output. We ask who signs off on write-off policy, denial appeals, coding education, and payer contract questions. That keeps the search tied to the actual scope.
What does a coding, CDI, or HIM workday look like?
Coding and HIM leaders often start with queue review, missing documentation, and coder questions. They may audit charts, send education back to providers, and check that records support the claim. CDI leaders often move between chart review, provider queries, and quick check-ins with coding and case management.
The best hire can explain how they handle backlog, quality review, and staff feedback without confusion. We ask about their review routine, how they correct repeat errors, and how they work with physicians when documentation needs correction.
How do patient access, PFS, and denials roles differ?
Patient access leaders focus on registration, insurance checks, authorizations, and point-of-service work. PFS and CBO leaders work the back end, where claims, payments, adjustments, and patient balances need close follow-up. Denials leaders spend much of the day on payer responses, appeal steps, and root-cause review.
When we help with these searches, we look at the stage of the cycle that needs the most attention. A strong hire knows where errors begin, who owns each handoff, and which reports show the problem. We ask for examples tied to access, billing, and denial recovery.
What should you ask in interviews for reimbursement and managed care roles?
Ask how the person reads a payer contract and what they do when payment does not match it. Ask how they track underpayment, denial trends, and appeal results. Ask which reports they use each week and which issues they bring to finance, operations, or physician leadership.
For managed care and reimbursement leaders, the answer should show clear ownership. We want to hear how they work with payer representatives, internal finance teams, and department heads. Concrete examples matter more than broad claims about relationships or communication style.
How should compensation align with the work?
Compensation moves with scope, team size, and the amount of financial ownership. A director handling several functions usually sits above a single-site manager. Specialized coding, CDI, and credentialing roles can vary based on certification, chart volume, physician contact, and whether the work is facility-based or group-based.
If you are setting pay for a search, we help compare the job to the actual work. We look at reporting lines, daily duties, and which decisions stay with the manager or move up to finance or operations. That keeps the offer tied to the job you need filled.
What else should you ask about this edition?
What should we define before opening a revenue cycle search?
Start with the handoff points that need the most attention. Tell us whether the gap is in access, coding, denials, reimbursement, or HIM oversight. That helps us match the level of ownership and the daily work.
How do we separate a manager search from a director search?
A manager usually runs the queue, coaches staff, and handles daily escalations. A director sets policy, works with finance or operations, and owns larger change decisions. The reporting line and approval path should be clear before we start.
What matters most for coding, CDI, and HIM candidates?
Ask about audit habits, provider follow-up, and how they handle repeat errors. Also ask how they work with physicians, coding staff, and revenue cycle leaders. The answer should show direct work on charts and records, not general oversight alone.
Can you help with non-permanent coverage for this family?
We arrange locum tenens, travel and contract coverage on request. Credentialing, licensing and malpractice coverage are confirmed per engagement before anyone starts. We can use that option when the work needs temporary coverage while the search continues.
