What does this hire really come down to?
A family physician may spend a day managing diabetes follow-ups, reviewing refill requests, seeing same-day patients, and answering portal messages. Another may also deliver babies, assist in the hospital, or perform office procedures. We define your actual schedule before presenting permanent candidates.
Family Physician and Primary Care Physician can describe an outpatient-only role. FM with OB describes a different commitment, including prenatal visits, call coverage, deliveries, and hospital privileges where applicable. Do not treat these titles as interchangeable. Decide which duties must be performed from the first month and which duties your team can teach or phase in.
A physician’s panel number does not explain the workday. Ask who handles prior authorizations, refill routing, triage messages, care gaps, and chronic-care outreach. A doctor with a large panel and strong nursing support may have a very different day from one personally clearing an inbox after clinic. We screen for the setting that matches your staffing pattern.
What do we ask candidates about?
- We discuss ABFM status, training and the patient care the physician provides now. License, DEA, malpractice history and privilege information inform the recruiting conversation. Your medical staff verifies credentials and assesses clinical judgment; a recruiter’s discussion does not replace either.
- An active state medical license is needed before a physician practices in your location. We discuss stated license status, states of prior practice and timing that may affect your hiring plan. Your organization completes primary-source verification.
- We separate outpatient-only work from full-scope family medicine. We ask about inpatient rounds, emergency coverage, prenatal care, deliveries, newborn care, and office procedures rather than assuming a title answers those questions.
- For an FM with OB opening, we ask about recent prenatal volume, delivery participation, call expectations, and the physician’s relationship with obstetric specialists. Interest in OB is not the same as recent practice.
- We discuss panel size alongside appointment length, chronic disease mix, advanced practice provider coverage, nursing help, and referral access. This identifies whether the candidate has worked with comparable daily decisions.
- EHR fluency includes more than naming a system. We ask how the physician closes notes, reviews results, handles refill queues, responds to patient messages, and uses staff escalation paths.
We discuss experience and qualifications. Your team assesses clinical ability and completes the credential checks before hiring.
Where do we look, and why would they move?
We recruit from hospital-employed primary care groups, FQHCs, value-based clinics, final-year family medicine residents, and locum physicians seeking a permanent position. Each source pool can bring different experience with referrals, access barriers, care-management teams, or independent decision-making.
People may consider a move after a practice changes its scope, call schedule, support staff, compensation approach, or location. Some want outpatient continuity care; others want to keep OB or procedures in their work. We present your real schedule and support structure privately, then screen credentials, work history, and fit through specific questions.
Which mistakes stall the search?
Assuming ABFM certification proves recent competency in deliveries, prenatal care, inpatient work, or office procedures.
Listing “full scope” without stating whether OB call, newborn care, hospital rounds, or procedure privileges are part of the job.
Quoting a panel target without explaining inbox coverage, nursing help, documentation time, and referral support.

What do employers ask us?
Can you recruit for an outpatient-only family physician?
Yes: we ask whether the physician has no inpatient, OB, delivery, or procedure duties. We also clarify same-day access, panel ownership, and inbox expectations.
What changes when we need an FM with OB?
We screen beyond general family medicine training. Recent prenatal and delivery work, call participation, hospital relationships, and local privileging needs all need discussion with your clinical leaders.
Should we hire a final-year family medicine resident?
A resident may fit if your onboarding plan matches the scope they will assume. We discuss expected license timing, board eligibility, procedure exposure, mentorship, and whether OB duties begin immediately.
How do you handle a physician who may relocate?
We ask about the reason for the move, timing, household considerations, and license plans. A stated interest in an area is useful, but your interview should test whether the practice and location fit the person’s plans.
How are fees handled?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Permanent/direct-hire recruitment is our core. Other needs can be discussed without assuming service availability; responsibilities and terms must be confirmed separately.
What should you send us about this role?
Send us the role, where the person will work and what needs to change with this hire. We will ask about the work, not just the title. Share any license or schedule limits that could rule someone out before we begin the search.
Tell us which family medicine duties belong in this role. We will start with the work your next physician must do.
